How can Kenyans develop their home towns

I have been observing the trend people follow through out their lives Kenya. Most people go through their primary and also secondary education around their home area. After that, people spread out all over the country in search for greener pastures and others even travel abroad. All in all, there are not so many places to go look for jobs in Kenya or even colleges. This results to almost everyone moving to Nairobi. No wonder traffic is hell in Nairobi . Other issues that arise include over populated streets, crime rises due to unemployment and many others. Back to my main point, i think one way to eliminate poverty in Kenya is creating opportunities at the district level. One example of doing this is encouraging people to start businesses in their home towns. Another way is for the government to encourage the big companies and industries to open their warehouses and factories all over the country if possible. This kind of move can help spread employment to many areas in the country and thus reduce poverty.

What do people do today ?
Anyone trying to start a business always considers a couple of things. One thing of course is the market and that is one reason why most Kenyan entrepreneurs and companies start their businesses in Nairobi. I have a few Kenyan friends who are in the U.S and they all have some projects going on in Nairobi. Of course you have to invest where there is a large market share to have returns but what about your home town? If their hometowns were thriving, am sure they woud have considered starting their businesses or projects there. The way things are currently, everyone is afraid to take that risk.

My Opinion (feel free to air yours)

If you have the resources and the ability to start something profitable (i am not suggesting that u make losses) in your home town, do it . The government should encourage the companies to be head quartered in other towns other than Nai. I think this would control the flow of people to Nai and give Kenyans a choice of going to other towns or even staying in their home town if they secure a job there. To make this effective, the government have to step up security in those locations and encourage businesses to invest in surveillance cameras and other security essentials. Have you ever wondered why Nai is the only city in Kenya that is outstanding? Other countries have a couple of cities. I believe we can develop Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Meru just to name a few into outstanding towns like Nairobi or even make them better than Nairobi. And let our government not forget that North Eastern is a province in Kenya, and not Somalia. Ama mtasemaje ?

@ Mwace..right on point..i also think the way the country is going on with the system of inheritance of land and also clearing forests will eventually change agriculture as the back bone of the economy. Something needs to be done otherwise Kenyans will starve. All Kenyans cannot depend on land inherited from their parents. What will happen when there will be no more land to give to your kids?

some said that the middle class is the problem in this country which is so true. We who have a place to live and have internet access among many other luxuries need to take part of the cash we have and invest in something small - no matter how small.

Start a small business hata kama ni ya kuuza sweetie and employ someone or better still work with those already in business by adding your product and letting them sell it for you for mutual benefit.

There is also need for those living in nai estates instead of buying everything at nakumatt ama uchumi buy vegetable at the kibanda at the corner or mama mboga. you will have used the cash you normally use and also improved your local economy by empowering those around you.
